Cover showcase: Mr Right and Other Mongrels – Monique McDonell

Each week one of the members of The Indie Exchange will be showcasing one of their covers and telling us the story behind it.

This week’s featured cover is from Mr Right and Other Mongrels by Monique McDonell, designed by Lisa Kelly.

Mr Right and Other Mongrels - Monique McDonnell

Monique McDonell says:

“When I went to publish this book a friend put me in touch with her sister who  was a new designer looking for an opportunity and we hit it off and decided to work together. The tricky part is she lives in the US and I live in Australia so I sent her the synopsis, first three chapters, some photos, images of covers I liked and a brief. I’d already knew I wanted a graphic not a photographic image and we started there. We Skyped once and then she sent me six different covers and I loved them all. I had a hard time choosing.

I wanted the cover to convey the light, fun energy of the book to readers and covey that it was a chick lit book. I also wanted an image that would look good in back and white  as a thumbnail on an e-reader. So far I’ve had nothing but positive feedback about the cover from readers.”

About Mr Right and Other Mongrels

Blissfully happy in her own universe Allegra (Ally) Johnson is the sweet best friend everyone wants to have. Quietly and independently wealthy she runs a charming second-hand bookshop in beachside Manly. Heck, sometimes she even goes downstairs from her flat to run the shop in her Chinese silk pyjamas. It sounds like bliss. But is it enough?

When dog-phobic Allegra is rescued from an exuberant canine by the chivalrous Teddy Green, Australia’s hottest TV celebrity and garden make-over guru, her life begins to change. Dramatically!

Unaware of Teddy’s fame Allegra finds herself falling for him, despite her best attempts to resist his charm. Supported by her eccentric family and her fabulous gay friend Justin, Allegra embarks on an on-again off-again romance with Teddy, complicated by his jealous ex-girlfriend, fashionista Louisa and her own narcissistic hippy mother Moonbeam.

Will Ally be able to overcome her insecurities and find happiness with this possible Mr Right or will Teddy’s celebrity lifestyle prove to be too much? Mr Right and Other Mongrels is a light-hearted story about how one chance encounter can change your life.

  1. I love your cover! It's cute and light. If the dog had been more active—perhaps jumping on the female causing her to loose her balance… Wouldn't that have been something?

  2. Very good choice there! I love the cover of the book as well as the summary. I've been searching about Mr. Right and other Mongrels, and found this post of yours. Thanks. Recommendable post!
